The USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides small to mid-size businesses located in rural areas with guaranteed loan financing and grant funding for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements. Many Ohio counties are considered qualifying rural areas.
With the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, grant amounts increased from 25% to 40% of total project costs. As of March 31, 2023, there has been another increase with grants now eligible to cover up to 50% of total project costs through September of 2024. Renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind generation, are eligible for grants up to $1,000,000 and grants for energy efficiency improvements are capped at $500,000. In addition to increased grant amounts, applications can now be submitted for any of these four deadlines:
- March 31
- June 30
- September 30
- December 31
